Rangers boss Gerrard still interested in Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy - report

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is still interested in signing Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy, according to the Chronicle.

The Daily Record reported in August that the Gers were keeping tabs on Murphy, who Newcastle signed from Norwich City for £12m in 2017 [Daily Mail].

The Gers were said to be facing competition, though, with a number of Championship clubs, including Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday, also interested [TEAMtalk].

Yet, Murphy fought his way back from the brink at St James’ Park, impressing Steve Bruce with strong performances in pre-season and in early rounds of the EFL Cup.

The 25-year-old was rewarded with a first Premier League start of the season last weekend away at Wolves in an unfamiliar role. He played the full 90 minutes at right wing-back and dug his side out of a hole, netting a dramatic late equaliser from a free-kick.

The Chronicle report suggests that Steven Gerrard remains keen on bringing Murphy to Glasgow and as a result, he may not be pleased by the player’s recent success in the Magpies first team.

It’s also suggested that Murphy – whose current deal expires at the end of the season – is holding early talks regarding a new contract, as Newcastle seek to avoid losing him for free in the summer.

The former England U21 international could be in Premier League action on Sunday in a home fixture against Everton, with Bruce admitting in the build-up that it would be ‘drastically unfair’ to leave him out if he once again opted for a back five [Shields Gazette].

In terms of out-and-out wingers, Rangers currently have Ryan Kent, Brandon Barker, Jordan Jones and Glenn Middleton to call upon, with Jake Hastie out on loan at Motherwell.

It’s certainly an area of the squad that could benefit from further strengthening and it will be interesting to see whether or not Gerrard attempts to swoop for Murphy in January.
