Rangers appear to be edging closer towards their second signing of the summer transfer window with Derek McInnes keen on Bristol City defender Ross McCrorie.

The 28-year-old defender came up the ranks at Ibrox and left the club in 2021 for Aberdeen.

Prior to that, the Scotland international was loaned out to the likes of Ayr United, Portsmouth, Dumbarton, and finally Aberdeen, where he ended up joining permanently.

Ross McCrorie set to become Rangers’ second signing of the summer

Rangers are set to secure the services of McCrorie, as he’s set to leave Bristol City, according to Chris Jack.

Sources have told Rangers News that there were clubs in the English Championship who were keen on securing the 28-year-old’s services.

However, a return to Ibrox is something the versatile defender wanted, and he appears all set to get it.

McCrorie was in the final 12 months of his contract at Bristol City, so a decision had to be made on his future this summer.

He wanted to leave the club and was tempted by the prospect of returning to the club where it all began.

McInnes and the Light Blues are looking to bolster their homegrown talent, and re-signing McCrorie will tick many boxes for them.

The Scotsman is capable of playing as a right-back, centre-back, wing-back, as well as putting in a shift in central midfield.

He will undoubtedly be able to contribute immensely, whether that’s from the opening whistle or off the bench.

How can Derek McInnes get the best out of McCrorie?

McCrorie appears all set to become McInnes’ first signing at Rangers.

By signing him, the Gers boss is getting a Swiss Army knife who he can call upon at any stage.

While he may not walk into the playing eleven, he is a player who’s extremely useful to get on off the bench regardless of the state of the game.

If the Light Blues are defending a lead, McInnes could put him in the backline, and the 28-year-old will put his body on the line for the team.

He is also capable of giving the team legs in the middle of the park and increasing the tempo of the game if they are chasing a result.
