Rangers and Celtic linked goalkeeper, Cameron Dawson, has signed a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday [Swfc.co.uk].
Earlier this month, the Sheffield Star reported that both Old Firm clubs were monitoring the 24-year-old’s situation, with his previous contract due to expire in the summer.
Derby County and Blackburn Rovers were also credited with an interest.
However, the former England youth international won’t be leaving Hillsborough for the foreseeable future, after signing a new deal tying him to the EFL Championship club until 2024.
“These last couple of months have been a real positive for me, and a real high in my Sheffield Wednesday career, so to now get this sorted and commit my long-term future, I’m delighted,” Dawson told Swfc.co.uk.
Verdict
Dawson had struggled for playing time up until November, making the prospect of a departure seem viable, despite the fact that he’s a boyhood Wednesday fan.
However, he’s since displaced Keiran Westwood as Garry Monk’s first choice, and the towering 6ft 4″ stopper has registered a decent total of six clean sheets from 16 Championship appearances this season.
Rangers are set to lose both Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick in the summer after the expiration of their contracts, but it’s now unclear whether or not they will recruit in order to replace them.
Current third-choice keeper, Andy Firth, recently signed a contract extension at Ibrox [Rangers.co.uk], while Robby McCrorie is contracted until 2022 and could be ready for the no.2 slot after a loan stint with Premiership side Livingston.
Last week, Stoke City striker Tyrese Campbell also opted to sign a new deal with his club, despite ‘extensive talks’ with both Rangers and Celtic [Sky Sports].
