PSV Eindhoven have something of a problem in the heart of their defence, ending the game at Ibrox with only one fit central defender and have now been linked with a player who was once rumoured to be a Rangers target in Jarrad Branthwaite.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because the 6ft 5inch tall defender was once tipped for a move to Ibrox when he was a promising teenage at Carlisle.

A seven-figure move to Everton has seen him spend more games out on loan however, according to PSV Eindhoven correspondent Rik Elfrink, former Rangers-linked Jarrad Branthwaite is a target for Peter Bosz.

Unfortunately for the Dutch outfit though, the 21-year old won’t be eligible to play in the second leg if he is signed in time having missed the cut-off point for new players.

Rangers interest in Jarrad Branthwaite was in 2019 when Steven Gerrard was looking to add a young defender who could be developed.

Filip Helander was signed as a starter and George Edmundson was brought in as a back-up with a view to seeing him progress over time.

The link with PSV might seem like a strange one but the former Rangers target spent last season in the Netherlands on loan.

Rangers and PSV Eindhoven go again next week with the scores level at 2-2 and Michael Beale will be hoping that his opposite number has to scrape the barrel for centre-halves due to a growing injury list.

He will take any advantage that he can get.

The Gers gaffer did say that the players he would be looking at this summer would be familiar and it is a surprise that Jarrad Branthwaite’s name has never resurfaced.

It has now and he could so easily have been lining up on our side rather than considering a return to our opponents .
