Premiership club agree deal for player once linked with Rangers - report

Fellow Premiership club St Johnstone have agreed a deal to sign John Mahon, a player Rangers were linked with during Steven Gerrard’s time at Ibrox, according to the Scottish Daily Express.

Mahon is a 22-year-old defender who currently plays in the Republic of Ireland for Sligo Rovers.

He’s made over 100 senior appearances for the side who finished third in the 2021 League of Ireland season.

He was linked with Rangers several years ago, when he was less established at senior level.

The Gers and Celtic as well as English clubs Derby County and Blackburn Rovers were credited with interest in Mahon in 2019, with both Old Firm clubs reportedly scouting him on a number of occasions [Daily Record via Express]

The ex-Republic of Ireland youth international stayed put in the end, but now finally appears to be about to make his big move to the UK.

The Scottish Daily Express reports that St Johnstone have agreed a six-figure transfer fee with Sligo Rovers and that talks regarding personal terms are now underway.

It’s asserted that the Saints are hopeful that the transfer will be finalised quickly.

Once Rangers-linked player on brink of Premiership move

A number of defenders have moved in and out of Ibrox since the initial links with Mahon, but it will still be interesting to see how he fares in the Premiership, when this transfer is confirmed.

Rangers are always on the lookout for impressive performers at other Scottish clubs, as the recent pre-contract swoop for John Souttar showed.

Given that he’s still very young, if Mahon can shine at McDiarmid Park, St Johnstone may turn out to be just a stepping stone for him.

However, it was reported back in 2019 that if given the pick of the two Old Firm clubs, he would prefer a move to Celtic.

Meanwhile, a former Rangers striker is set to jet off to Australia on Saturday with a view to signing for an A-League club.
