Rangers may have a solution to the situation surrounding the talented by perennially injured Filip Helander amid links to Aston Villa and a Steven Gerrard reunion.

The Ibrox gaffer waxed lyrical about Filip Helander when the Swedish international signed on at Rangers and claimed the £3m spent to bring him from Serie A Bologna was a bargain.

And whilst at times this has proven to be the case, a fit and firing Filip Helander the best defender at Rangers and in Scotland, the centre-back’s injury problems continue to be a major bugbear.

This has led to some questions regarding the suitability of the high-earning 28-year-old, with Rangers found wanting at centre-back several times this season.

According to Football Insider, Premier League Aston Villa could offer Rangers and Big Fil a reprieve this summer with Gerrard still a keen admirer.

They claim that as a left-sided centre-back who could present a solution to £20m Aston Villa star Tyrone Mings, who is yet to convince Gerrard since the Scouser joined the club.

Filip Helander linked to Aston Villa amid spate of Rangers injuries

Sustaining a foot injury in the 2019 Betfred Cup Final defeat to Celtic, this was the first major issue of his Ibrox career and since then the defender has spent big chunks on the sidelines.

Undergoing a knee operation following a clash with St Johnstone earlier in the season, Filip Helander’s impressive start to this campaign was curtailed and he had only recently returned to action before his latest blow.

Disaster then struck again as Rangers romped to a 4-0 victory over St Mirren, the defender spotted in a protective boot and manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst eventually confirming he’d be out of for the season after playing only 11 games.

It’s clear from this campaign that Rangers have too many players in their squad who are injury prone and who continue to pick up niggles and going forward this is going to have to change.

With only a year left on his current deal, perhaps a cut price Filip Helander move to Aston Villa would be good for all parties as Rangers shape up to invest this summer.

Meanwhile, Rangers have dropped a major summer transfer hint ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer at Ibrox.
