‘Outstanding’ Rangers star could depart this summer, there’s no place for him in the team

Rangers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin looks set to depart the club this summer, with game time now looking very limited for the veteran.

The 35-year-old was subject to a lot of criticism after some notable errors when he was rotating with Allan McGregor, and with the Rangers legend now departed, he may have been expecting to continue in a regular role.

However, the arrival of Jack Butland this summer has meant that there is no potential for regular minutes for McLaughlin, with Butland set to be the long-term first choice under Michael Beale, and he could now depart.

A report from The Rangers Review has stated that both club and player could move on this summer, as McLaughlin searches for first-team action and Rangers attempt to trim down the squad in what has been a busy transfer window.

Should Rangers sell McLaughlin?

Butland’s arrival should spell a fresh start in the goalkeeping department going forward. Although McLaughlin did impress at times, with Beale even calling him “outstanding” following criticism directed at him, now could be the best time to part ways.

Rangers have Robby McCrorie available as a backup option, and could even dip into the free agent market to find an alternative number two should he also depart, and with Butland as the undisputed number one, McLaughlin now knows that an exit is the right move if he wants to continue playing in the Scottish Premier League.

McLaughlin has one year left on his contract, but it seems unlikely that they would recoup a significant fee for him anyway, so if he were to stay as a backup for one more season, there would be little negative financial impact.

He has kept 29 clean sheets in 46 games since joining in 2020, but despite rotating in for McGregor, he never established himself as the out-and-out number one, and this chance is now gone at Rangers.
