Opinion splitting Rangers transfer rumour makes sense for three reasons

Add as preferred source on Google

Rangers have been linked with several players already in this transfer window with one name likely to stimulate debate amongst fans, Scott McKenna.

The former Aberdeen stopper has been linked with both sides of the Old Firm in recent days with Nottingham Forest all but writing off their initial £6m investment.

There was a time when this sort of rumour would have caused the Ibrox faither to be outraged, but is their logic in Rangers signing Scott McKenna? Here’s three reasons why it might not be as far-fetched as it seems.

Why Rangers might consider Scott McKenna option

The strength of source has improved with Sky Sports now claiming that Rangers have joined Celtic in notifying their interest.

Scotland international McKenna is said to have a preference between the two Glasgow sides and it isn’t a penchant for Philippe Clement’s side.

The Gers boss does need new recruits for his squad though but the centre-half department is well stocked so, why should we sign him?

Leon Balogun shouldn’t have his contract re-newed

The veteran has performed admirably but time is not on his side, do we want a 36-year old with a poor recent injury history as our first choice partner for Connor Goldson going into next season?

If the answer is no, what is the point of extending his contract again to block Leon King, who has hardly kicked a ball this year.

If Ben Davies can be sold

Davies is now fourth choice under Clement, is there any point keeping a player in their peak years when they still have sell-on value?

Some solid performances in the Europa League should keep his price tag relatively high.

Rangers are desperate for home grown players

Basically, needs must.

Rangers can’t afford players like John McGinn or Andy Robertson to improve our home grown quota so we need to shop around for players like Scott McKenna.

I would still be advocating for Clement to sign a genuine first-choice to fill the left-sided centre-back role but as one of four, a player with Premier League experience and with 30 caps would be good enough.

We’ve seen in the Scottish Premiership how much time we spend with just two players at the back and McKenna could easily man mark most of the strikers he would come up against in the league.

In an ideal world we wouldn’t be targeting a player who can’t get in the squad of a team struggling for relegation but, with  his contract ending in the summer, he ticks more boxes than he doesn’t.
