The form of one-time reported Rangers target Danilho Doekhi at Union Berlin is attracting interest from England and Italy as Ibrox fans are left thinking what might’ve been.

The former Vitesse Arnhem defender was heavily linked to Rangers last season as his contract ticked down in the Netherlands but the Dutch centre-back chose the Bundesliga over Ibrox.

Since the summer switch was completed, Danilho Doekhi has impressed with the Champions League hopefuls and the defender made headlines with a deadly double over the weekend.

Scoring two headers in Union Berlin’s 3-1 comeback victory over Hoffenheim, the big centre-back showed his leadership credentials at both sides of the pitch and left his mark on the German top flight.

So much so that Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the player’s progress at Union Berlin is attracting interest from clubs in England and Italy ahead of the summer.

Danilho Doekhi has Rangers fans asking what if

When you also factor in that Union Berlin are currently 3rd in the Bundesliga and in with a shout of Champions League football, it’s clear Danilho Doekhi would’ve been an impressive signing for Rangers.

But the project at Union Berlin remains an intriguing one and given the pulling power of the Bundesliga Rangers faced an uphill battle to convince the defender to sign on in Scotland.

Whilst the links have never been directly confirmed, the Dutch defender might certainly have been the player referred to by Ross Wilson when he discussed a failure to sign any players from the nation during Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s tenure

You can bet that should Danilho Doekhi move on in the summer that Union Berlin could fetch a pretty penny but perhaps that Champions League opportunity will have the player hanging around Germany.

This season the 24-year-old defender has made seven Bundesliga appearances, scoring three goals and laying on two assists; not bad for a centre-back.

Danilho Doekhi has also played four times in the Europa League, with Union Berlin progressing from Group D behind Belgian side USG and earning a playoff tie against Champions League drop-outs Ajax as a result.

Meanwhile, here’s an update on Rangers’ pursuit of Morgan Whittaker.
