Oli McBurnie shares contract stance amid lingering Rangers links

Rangers links to Oli McBurnie may again fade away in 2024 as he seeks to land a new Sheffield United contract.

Every club has those players who just seem to be linked constantly but never actually join.

Oli McBurnie appears to be the Rangers version of that, having been linked with an Ibrox move for years now.

From the Daily Mail suggesting in 2021 that Rangers were launching a club-record bid for McBurnie to the Sheffield Star now claiming that the Gers are ‘likely’ monitoring the striker, McBurnie is a name that just won’t go away.

A summer move was ruled out as Sheffield United activated an option in McBurnie’s contract, and a 2024 move looks unlikely too.

Oli McBurnie wants to stay at Sheffield United

In that Sheffield Star report, they carry quotes from McBurnie in which he talks about his contract situation.

McBurnie’s contract ends in the summer and his future is now up for debate once again.

The Scotland international noted that he is ‘definitely’ looking to stay at Sheffield United and has enjoyed being back in Yorkshire having previously been with Swansea City.

Leeds-born McBurnie added that staying at Bramall Lane is a ‘no-brainer’, suggesting that he isn’t exactly angling for a 2024 transfer.

“Definitely,” he said. “You know how happy I am here and I’m settled back up north. Being around it, I get on well with the fans and the staff and all the boys. I love it here so yes, it’s a no-brainer.”

Rangers would be wise to track McBurnie situation

McBurnie’s priority may be to stay at Sheffield United, but a Rangers approach would be hard to turn down.

McBurnie told Open Goal in 2020 that he is a boyhood Rangers fan and would regularly travel up to watch the Gers in action.

We also see McBurnie tweeting about Rangers too, so the club is close to his heart through his Glaswegian father.

Seeing Rangers splash more money on strikers would be a surprise after paying up for Cyriel Dessers, Danilo and Sam Lammers over the summer.

Yet with McBurnie coming to the end of his contract, there is a real chance to secure a bargain free transfer.

McBurnie has divided opinion in his career but he scored goals last season and should be on the Rangers radar in case he decides to leave Sheffield United for free after joining them for £20million in 2019.
