Michael Beale could now have his own Marco van Basten at Ibrox as Rangers close in on a deal to sign Sam Lammers.

A story from Tutto Mercato Web in Italy claims that Rangers are about to bring the Dutchman to Glasgow after striking a deal with the Serie A side.

So – if that is true – what could Sam Lammers bring to Rangers? Let’s take a look…

Rangers could get Marco van Basten 2.0 in Sam Lammers

Well, Rangers fans would be forgiven for not knowing much about the 26-year-old as he is not exactly a household name.

However, Lammers has been compared to one in Van Basten.

It was FourFourTwo who mentioned that those in the Netherlands have likened the Rangers target to one of Dutch football’s greatest ever players.

Van Basten remarkably scored 277 goals in 373 appearances throughout his phenomenal career, so it speaks volumes that Lammers has been compared to a striker of this quality.

Gian Piero Gasperini – Manager of Atalanta – once expanded on the similarities between Lammers and Van Basten, while being careful of buying into the comparison too much.

The Italian is quoted by The Athletic as saying: “I don’t want to make comparisons that put him under any pressure but watching the way he moves, he’s a Dutch striker of great class.

“I’m not saying Marco van Basten but he’s tall and slender with great coordination, skill and the kinds of moves that were so typical of the Dutch players from that era.”

Unfortunately, Lammers has seen his career stall somewhat during his loan spell at Sampdoria in the 2022/23 campaign, scoring just two goals in 34 appearances having initially burst onto the scene with 19 goals in the 2018/19 season.

Despite a tough few years, there is no denying that the Tilburg-born striker has talent, and Beale would have a serious player on his hands if he can inject a bit of confidence into the Dutchman at Rangers.
