Mercurial former Rangers winger Barrie McKay is still available on a free transfer following his release by Swansea City earlier this summer.

After a brief stint in the Academy, McKay made his Gers first-team debut in 2012.

He went on to make 140 Rangers appearances over the following five years, scoring 20 goals and notching 39 assists.

The 26-year-old is capable of the spectacular, with his stunning long-range effort against Celtic in the 2015/16 Scottish Cup semi-final an iconic goal.

Since leaving Ibrox for a reported £500k [BBC Sport], he’s played for Nottingham Forest, Swansea and Fleetwood Town (loan), managing a total of 13 goals and 21 assists across 105 appearances.

McKay and fellow former Gers player Declan John were released by the Swans earlier this summer and while John has found a new club – signing a three-year deal at Bolton Wanderers – McKay is still a free agent.

Consistency has been his main issue since progressing to senior football and he’s still waiting for a suitable club to take a chance on him.

He was popular during his time at Ibrox and some fans would no doubt like to see him return.

After all, he’s still a very good age and his free-agent status would ensure there’d be next to no financial risk involved.

However, Rangers are already relatively well stocked in wide areas, with Ryan Kent, Scott Wright and Fashion Sakala, while Brandon Barker, Glenn Middleton and Jordan Jones are also all still on the books.

Most of McKay’s appearances for the Gers came in the lower divisions of Scottish football and he may not be a significant enough upgrade on some current options for it to be worth bringing him back at this stage.

One of Rangers’ current crop of wingers could soon be on his way out, though, with an English club reportedly primed to swoop.
