Kenny McLean, the midfielder Kris Boyd urged Rangers to sign earlier this summer, has committed his future to EFL Championship club, Norwich City.
Steven Gerrard wants to strengthen in the middle of the park and after the departures of Jason Holt, Jordan Rossiter, Greg Docherty and Ross McCrorie, there’s certainly space for a new recruit.
However, it won’t be the man Kris Boyd suggested the Gers swoop for back in May.
“Kenny McLean might be one,” wrote Boyd in the Scottish Sun.“He’ll be on big money at Norwich City and he’s arguably at the peak of his career.”
“But he’s a big Rangers man and, who knows, could he be tempted to come back up the road if an offer was placed in front of him with his side likely to go down?”
Norwich did go on to be relegated from the Premier League after finishing bottom of the table, 14 points from safety.
However, the drop wasn’t wholly unexpected for a squad who had gained promotion ahead of schedule and it seems the poor campaign hasn’t put the Scotland international off life at Carrow Road.
On Wednesday afternoon, it was announced that he had penned a new three-year contract with the Canaries, tieing him to the club until the summer of 2023.
“It’s great for myself and my family to be staying here for a few more years,” McLean told canaries.co.uk. “We’ve been speaking for quite a while, since COVID, and when we spoke about it with the club it was something that all parties wanted.
“I’ve loved it since I’ve been here. It’s been a couple of years now and it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster at times but I’ve been very fortunate to be a part of it all.”

Given that he grew up a Rangers supporter, there’s always going to be speculation about McLean fancying a move to Ibrox.
However, it was unlikely that, even after Norwich’s top-flight struggles last season, he would return to Scotland after only two seasons south of the border.
McLean played in all but one of the Canaries’ league fixtures last season but he’s not the kind of dynamic box-to-box player the Gers are crying out for.
Rangers need something different to what is currently offered by the likes of Davis, Jack and Kamara, and the former Aberdeen man, although a good player in his own right, would just have brought more of the same.
