Rangers have reportedly missed out on the signing of Darko Gyabi with the Leeds United talent heading to Plymouth Argyle.

Rangers have been linked with so many names in recent weeks but only one new face has arrived at Ibrox in the January transfer window.

Fabio Silva joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Philippe Clement will be hoping for more new faces yet.

A recent midfield crisis resulted in Dujon Sterling playing in Clement’s engine room, so maybe Rangers can look to add a new face there.

One surprise rumour has emerged though with Rangers linked with a move for Leeds United talent Darko Gyabi.

Rangers allegedly miss out on Darko Gyabi

Football Insider claim that Rangers showed a ‘strong interest’ in signing Gyabi before the agreed to sign for Plymouth Argyle.

None of the more reputable Scottish-based sources have asked that up but it’s suggested that Rangers missed out on Gyabi’s signature.

The former Manchester City prospect joined Leeds for £5million in 2022 but has yet to really break through at Elland Road.

Leeds have now sent Gyabi on loan to Plymouth Argyle until the end of the season, reuniting him with former England youth coach Ian Foster.

Maybe that connection was key to Gyabi heading to Argyle rather than Rangers, with Foster delighted to land his man.

“He’s a number eight, if you like. He’s someone who can link the play. He has got the technical capabilities of being that link player from the first to the second phase, and then from the second phase into the final phase,” Foster told the Plymouth Herald.

“He can pass past you and he can dribble past you, and he has got the energy and athleticism to arrive in the ball as well. A box-to-box midfielder would be fair assessment of him,” he added.

The 19-year-old made his Argyle debut on Saturday, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw away at Huddersfield Town.

We can’t imagine that Rangers wanted to take Gyabi on loan; a youngster who can’t get into the Leeds side wouldn’t really make sense as a short-term signing at Ibrox.

Perhaps Rangers did fancy Gyabi as a permanent signing though, seeing big potential in a player who hasn’t quite lived up to that £5million price tag.

Rangers could keep tabs on Gyabi’s loan spell with Argyle just in case a summer deal makes sense, but we would anticipate other midfield additions arriving instead.
