Someone should probably tell Rangers that the transfer window is open so that Philippe Clement has half a chance of salvaging something from a season that many have already written off.

Names have been few and far between in terms of potential targets with the manager still having to play players out of position with a squad that needs a lot of remedial work.

One player who Rangers are reported to be leading the chase for is Lyall Cameron with Dundee boss Tony Docherty resigned to losing one of his best talents.

Previewing his side’s game against Celtic, Docherty said:

“It is no surprise when a player like that is out of contract and there will be interest in him. It is purely speculation at the moment. We have a lot of players, six or seven who are out-of-contract at the end of the season.

“We have identified, as a club, to offer contract extensions and it is then their prerogative what they do with them. A couple have come back and said they will sign and others are exploring their options.

“Lyall is in that category. It is the business we are in and it doesn’t surprise me that there is that amount of speculation about Lyall because he is an extremely talented young footballer.”

Patrick Stewart spoke about Rangers signing more homegrown talent and Cameron is a perfect example.

Targeting the ‘best of the rest’ is a tried and tested recruitment strategy and the Ibrox outfit have let too many young players get romanced by the other side of the Old Firm.

How much would Cameron cost Rangers?

If the academy can’t produce them, Rangers need to sign them and Cameron wouldn’t be an expensive option.

The comparison with Connor Barron is an easy one to make because of their similar profiles in terms appearances and international status with Rangers believed to be of the opinion that Cameron would cost around the same

An initial £650,000 fee with a £250,000 add-on and 10% sell-on clause is a bargain for a player who can make an immediate impact, be developed further and who helps with UEFA squad quotas.

All Rangers have to do now is get the deal over the line.
