Aberdeen striker Luis Lopes nets his 18th goal of the season against Ross County over the weekend, with Rangers fans closely following the Dons attacker’s progress.

The Gers support have revelled in raiding their inferior northeastern rivals with the scar tissue of Ryan Jack and to a lesser extent Scott Wright still cut deep into the Pittodrie subconscious.

Portuguese attacker Luis Lopes, also known as Duk, has probably been the stand-out Premiership performer outside of the Old Firm and his goalscoring record has Rangers fans talking.

Rangers fans eye Aberdeen striker Luis Lopes

Whilst, unlike Rangers-linked Lawrence Shankland, Luis Lopes would not satisfy a homegrown quota, but signing the 23-year-old forward would weaken Aberdeen and embolen Michael Beale’s rebuild.

We should point out that there is no specific link between Rangers, Aberdeen and your man Duk but as the club looks towards the summer the striker represents an interesting option.

Joining the Dons on a three-year deal from the Benfica youth set-up in the summer, Luis Lopes has had an explosive start to his Aberdeen career, with the striker scoring his 18th goal in the 1-0 victory over the Staggies.

It’s the striker’s 16th in the Premiership – where he’s also added six assists – with the other two coming in the League Cup, and his sixth goal in five Scottish top flight matches.

This includes doubles against Hearts and Kilmarnock as he fires Jim Goodwin’s side up to 3rd and proves he can put the Premiership jobbers to the sword.

For perspective, under fire Rangers winger Ryan Kent only has three Premiership goals this season.

Duk commits future to Aberdeen

Whilst Rangers fans might be musing over a potential move for Luis Lopes, the striker himself has been talking up his time in Aberdeen and his desire to stay at Pittodrie.

“I’m focused on Aberdeen,” Duk told Sky Sports.

“I’m happy here, I enjoy playing here, I want to stay here.”

Given these comments, it would make it all the sweeter if Rangers could pinch Luis Lopes from under the noses of Aberdeen fans.
