Lewis Ferguson to Rangers a missed opportunity after Serie A latest

Rangers were linked with a move for Lewis Ferguson on numerous occasions when he was at Aberdeen.

Now, it’s safe to say that the 23-year old might just be out of Michael Beale’s price range.

The Scotland international has just scored his 5th Serie A goal of the season which must leave Rangers wondering why they didn’t just stump up the cash for Lewis Ferguson.

A home-grown player, a Rangers fan and related to two outstanding midfielders from the club’s not too distant past made a move to Ibrox seem inevitable.

Even when Bologna were first mentioned as potential suitors, there seemed an inevitability about a player who had consistently hit good numbers in Scotland fulfilling his destiny – a reported £3m fee also didn’t seem excessive.

Why Lewis Ferguson should have been a no brainer for Rangers

Lewis Ferguson is everything Rangers have lacked in midfield this season.

He is athletic, robust, aggressive and can chip in with goals.

To put it into perspective, in 30 league games, Ferguson’s five goals are only a couple behind John Lundstram, Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara combined.

The five-times capped international plays in a much more competitive league against significantly better defences too.

Ferguson’s situation was different to that of Josh Doig or Aaron Hickey’s.

When the two capital-based full-backs flew out to Serie A, Rangers were well stocked with Calvin Bassey, Borna Barisic, James Tavernier and Nathan Patterson.

There was no way, even if we had made bids that had been accepted, that the promising pair would give up first-team football to stay in Scotland.

Plus, what’s more attractive, Rome, Milan and the San Siro or Dingwall, Livingston and the Toni Macaroni?

Lewis Ferguson was a player that we needed and had an emotional attachment to the club, it was a deal that could have been done.

With Juventus now said to be sniffing about to the tune of £10m, it’s a ship that has well and truly sailed.
