Lee McCulloch predicts 'marquee' Rangers summer transfer

Lee McCulloch has predicted that Rangers will secure the services of a big name in the summer, in his Evening Times column.
It’s still some time before the transfer window opens. Yet, pre-contract agreements ensure we know two new players will be joining in the coming months.
Kilmarnock’s Jordan Jones and Motherwell’s Jake Hastie, whose signing was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.

However, the former club captain believes something bigger is in the pipeline.
“Steven [Gerrard] can’t afford to be in the same situation he was this year when he was short of options in the final third,” wrote McCulloch, in the Evening Times.
“I can see Rangers making a marquee signing this summer and I think they could probably do with one. I don’t know who that could be, but it would be interesting if they could get a bigger name on loan that would really get the fans excited.”
“It will certainly be interesting to see what happens in terms of the strikers in particular.”

Verdict

Rangers have played it smart so far in going after talented, out-of-contract players.
However, if they are really going to unsettle Celtic this summer, a statement signing may be needed.
The arrival of Jermain Defoe created a major buzz around the club in January, but results after the winter break quickly dampened that.
This time around, it would be great to get a similarly big name in early doors. Therefore, with the benefit of a full pre-season, they would be able to hit the ground running as the Gers look to mount a genuine challenge next season.
