A Daily Record report has provided an update on Rangers stance on Borna Barisic, which should be music to Bears’ ears amid alleged transfer interest from Roma.

Over the weekend, Steven Gerrard admitted that the Serie A giants were interested in his star left-back, asserting that the club has ‘no ambition’ to move Barisic on, but refusing to ‘completely shut it down’ [Scottish Herald].

A Sunday Post report followed, claiming that despite the Gers boss’ comments, Roma were ‘willing to dig deep’ to push through a move this month.

Various suggestions of a transfer fee followed with Gazzetta Dello Sport in Italy suggesting a loan move with an eventual €5 million sum could be enough to prize him away from Ibrox.

However, this latest Record report claims that Barisic has since been told that Rangers will not contemplate selling him for any price during this transfer window, as he’s too integral to the club’s Premiership title bid.

Verdict

If this latest report is to be believed, sense has prevailed at Ibrox.

There’s little doubt that if Rangers opted to sell Barisic during this window, they could get more than €5 million for him.

However, that would represent a short-term cash influx which may have a very damaging impact on the chase for silverware.

The 27-year-old was outstanding across the first half of the season. A near ever-present since September, he’s been robust defensively and a major threat in attack, scoring twice and contributing a whopping 13 assists.

If the club opted to let him go, the reality is that they wouldn’t be able to recruit someone of a similar standard on just a few days notice.

In any case, come the summer, hopefully, after Rangers have lifted a 55th top-flight title, Barisic will take part in Euro 2020 with Croatia, after which his valuation should skyrocket.
