Andy Halliday has delivered his verdict on Rangers securing the services of Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean this summer.

McLean held talks over a return to Rangers back in 2024, but the move did not materialise.

The Light Blues were seriously considering signing the Scotland international at the time when Philippe Clement was the manager.

Andy Halliday believes Kenny McLean is a leader Rangers can sign

Halliday believes that if the Gers want proven leaders, they should look no further than McLean this summer.

The 34-year-old has been linked with a move to Ibrox for the last three seasons, but the deal has never been finalised.

The Norwich City man was at Rangers’ academy from 2006 to 2008 before he left for St. Mirren.

He even spent three seasons at Aberdeen, but has been at Norwich since 2018, and could look for a new challenge this summer.

His deal at Carrow Road does run out at the end of June, but the club hold the option to renew it for another year.

Discussing his potential move to Ibrox on Open Goal, Halliday said: “It’ll just be a test who they identify as that [a proven leader] because one of them is probably Kenny McLean who’s been linked for the last three seasons.

“I think he’s 35 now, Kenny McLean.”

Will McLean be considered by Danny Rohl?

Signing leaders is something Danny Rohl and the owners want this summer, but it remains to be seen what age range they are considering.

McLean, at 34, has his best days behind him, and the only thing that could justify this transfer is the fact that he will bring much-needed leadership to the dressing room.

If he could be signed on a free transfer and his wages won’t break the pay structure at Ibrox, it would make sense to have him on for a couple of seasons.

While he may not be a first-team regular, he could be an influential voice behind the scenes and a bit-part player on the field of play.

Midfield is, anyway, an area that the Gers do not seem to be keen on strengthening, so even if McLean is the only new midfielder that joins this summer, it would not be the end of the world.
