St Mirren midfielder Keanu Baccus has admitted his dreams of playing in the Premier League amid links with a move to Rangers.

The Gers will surely add some new energy in midfield this summer.

Ryan Jack, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield are all out of contract and it may be time for Rangers to go in another direction.

The signing of Nicolas Raskin in January was a great start for Rangers will need more to boost Michael Beale’s engine room.

One name mentioned ahead of the January window was St Mirren ace Keanu Baccus.

The Scottish Sun reported that Rangers had identified Baccus as a potential target with the Australian into the final 18 months of his contract.

January passed without a deal being done but with bodies potentially needed in midfield, Baccus may still be on the Rangers radar.

Keanu Baccus opens up on Premier League dream

Baccus, 24, joined St Mirren from Western Sydney Wanderers in 2022 and has made a positive impact in Scotland.

The South African-born midfielder played so well that he ended up in Australia’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Baccus made an impression on the big stage, as former Rangers ace Craig Moore hailed Baccus as ‘unbelievable’ for Australia against Denmark.

The Telegraph noted in January that Baccus would be available for around £350,000, which Rangers could surely afford, though a number of English teams were keen.

Rangers may well target Baccus this summer but he has his eyes on the Premier League.

Baccus has told told FTBL in Australia that he wants to play in England’s top flight one day.

Baccus noted that he thinks Scottish football suits his game well but he wants to make it to the Premier League ‘in the near future’.

“I realised really quickly what a man has to do to survive there – it’s a very demanding league,” Baccus said. “It suits my game, people were shocked because I might be slimmer but I love getting amongst it. The pressure (of relegation) is something I probably needed to progress myself.”

“It’s always been a dream of mine to play in the Premier League … the goal is to get there one day, who knows when but hopefully in the near future,” he added.

Rangers won’t want to be viewed as a ‘stepping stone’ by anybody but maybe there needs to be a focus on player trading.

Look at Calvin Bassey – bought on the cheap and sold for big money. In the cases of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, Rangers probably held on for too long and both could leave for nothing now.

A Premier League dream isn’t a bad thing and if Rangers can sign Baccus, the midfielder could have a big platform – and potentially rake in some profit.
