Jose Mourinho urged ‘hurry up and sign’ Rangers’ £7m Europa League hero for Fenerbahce

The very best talent in the Scottish Premiership – even those under contract at domestic powerhouses Rangers and Celtic – do not tend to stick around for long.

And, shortly after Philippe Clement admitted that Rangers would struggle to meet Wolfsburg’s reported £7 million price-tag required to turn Vaclav Cerny’s loan deal into a permanent transfer, the Czech Republic international spoke out about the ‘other options’ he expected to appear.

Cerny’s point was that, as long as he finished his time at Ibrox with a healthy return in the goals and assists charts, there would be plenty of clubs willing to take a chance on him in the summer transfer window.

Cerny is loving life at Rangers.

But not enough, perhaps, for a player with lofty ambitions in both the club and the international game to turn down a second stab at one of the major leagues in European football. And, maybe, Champions League action.

Fenerbahce urged to sign Vaclav Cerny after Rangers loan

Vaclav Cerny terrorised Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce over two legs. His brace in Istanbul helped ensure that Rangers will face Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals of the Europa League next month.

And, while much was made pre-match about the strength of Fenerbahce’s squad in comparison to that of their last-16 opponents, Turkish pundit Sercan Hamzaolu clearly feels there is at least one member of Barry Ferguson’s roster who would walk into Mourinho’s XI.

“Fenerbahce should hurry up and sign Vaclav Cerny,” Sercan Hamzaolu said after watching the former Ajax starlet wreak havoc in the opening 45 minutes at Ibrox, mustering the most shots of any Rangers player with eight from his more central role.

“He is an effective and fast winger who has been sought after for years. His market value is eight to nine million euros.”

Cerny set his sights on 20 goals in a Rangers shirt. With two months of the season remaining, he is now only three away. This is also the most prolific campaign of the winger’s career.

Rangers face Ligue 1 and Bundesliga battle for Wolfsburg loanee

Agent David Nehoda claims that French and German clubs are chasing Cerny already ahead of the summer window. Even if he is destined to burn bright but briefly at Ibrox, a player revitalised in Scotland will forever credit Rangers are the club which re-launched his career.

“I can’t say what will happen next, but I don’t think it’s very realistic for him to stay at Rangers,” Nehoda explains. “His contract at Wolfsburg ends in the summer of 2027. So, I would assume that the club will want to recall him, or there will be interested parties who would like to buy him.

“There is already interest from France and Italy. I know Vaclav’s ambitions; To return to one of the top five leagues in Europe.

“Everything has worked out beautifully for him since his loan spell. In the Europa League, Vaclav has shown what an exceptional player he is. At Rangers, his coaches and teammates trust him, the fans applaud him and he has a great family background.

“He is calm and everything is reflected in his well-being and performances. The style in which Rangers play is tailor-made for him. That’s exactly how he likes it.”
