Michael Beale’s summer recruitment should see John Fleck lined up as his replacement after Ryan Jack’s latest injury blow.

Scotland international Jack is out of contract in the summer and may have an offer on the table almost entirely by default but that isn’t good enough.

As a home-grown player, and one of decent quality, the Gers gaffer may decide to keep the injury prone Ryan Jack around for another season.

Beale should, however, look south to a player fresh from playing against some of the world’s best.

John Fleck left Rangers as a talented youngster who was compared to Wayne Rooney and has had a valuation of over £20m when he was linked with a move to Arsenal.

Fellow Premier League outfit West Ham United were also said to have considered a £4m bid for the former Gers wonderkid before his impressive debut campaign in the top flight.

Why John Fleck should be a summer target for Rangers

At 31-years old, Fleck has carved out a more than respectable career as a defensive midfield playmaker similar to Steven Davis and has plenty of miles left in the tank.

Capped for Scotland and with two seasons in the Premier League, Fleck is a better player than the one that left Ibrox a lifetime ago when he signed for Coventry City.

Having someone who can sit in front of the back four and dictate play and spray passes around would allow the likes of Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell more freedom.

That Fleck is a converted number ten is also a benefit because his passing range and vision can be compared to Davis, and something we have badly missed.

The Sheffield United midfielder would be classed as a club developed player and is available on a free transfer this summer if the Blades don’t take up a one-year option that they have to extend his current deal.

Promotion to the Premier League could see John Lundstram’s old teammate deemed surplus to requirements if they decide to splash some of the cash that will be heading their way.

He might not be the hero we want but, with Scott Arfield heading for 35, Allan McGregor already 41 and Ryan Jack unable to guarantee over 30 games a season, Fleck is the type of player we need.

Whether we like it or not.
