Rangers’ failure to qualify for the Champions League has dealt the club an apparent blow in their pursuit of Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman.

The Dutch playmaker, 22, has been on the radar of several clubs this summer but the Eredivisie side won’t budge on their valuation of the player, believed to be around £8m.

Rangers had reportedly put together an initial £7m package for the midfielder [Glasgow Times] but after failing to land the £30m+ jackpot Champions League qualification brings the move is in jeopardy.

That’s according to SM Media, who claim that the Dutch talent now appears to be out of the Glasgow giant’s reach.

According to that report, the carrot of Champions League football was one of the major drivers which could’ve convinced Veerman to move to Glasgow.

Given the value of the deal and the fact Rangers missed out of the European jackpot, this is an easy set of dots to connect.

Rangers’ failure to qualify for the Champions League has wide-reaching complications for the club with the Gers now needing to plug a forecasted £14.4m financial gap this summer.

Failure to qualify has now flipped the transfer rhetoric surrounding the club, with sales now expected rather than the type of investment which would take Veerman to Glasgow.

Glen Kamara, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos are undoubtedly the club’s top assets and Gers fans will be nervously chewing their fingernails surrounding potential interest in the trio.

Kamara has been linked to a host of Premier League sides, Leeds United are known to be admirers of Ryan Kent whilst FC Porto continue to be linked to Alfredo Morelos.

However, prior to the club’s Champions League exit one journalist was claiming an imminent new deal for one of these three could spell the end of interest in Joey Veerman anyway.
