Premier League side list £4m ex-Rangers loanee for sale who Steven Gerrard branded a ‘leader’

Rangers have been targeting younger players to revitalise a squad that had grown square, however, Nils Koppen will still look to bring experience in too though.

Five players have left all over 30-years old and Philippe Clement has spoken about replacing wise old heads with others who have been there and got the t-shirt.

This doesn’t mean that the old heads have to be covered with grey hair, just that they have been around the block and Rangers could have the chance to bring someone who knows the demands of Ibrox back to the club as he approaches his peak.

Former Rangers loanee Joe Worrall surplus to requirements

At 27-years old, Joe Worrall has gone from Nottingham Forest captain, playing a key role in their promotion to the Premier League and survival in their first season, to being surplus to requirements, according to The Telegraph.

In 2018, the 6ft 3inch centre-half took the decision to head to the SPFL for more regular game time and spent most of his time partnering Connor Goldson.

One major blip aside, he was largely a success, and you could see the potential that the England Under-21 international had.

It was a decision that Worrall would later appreciate for helping to accelerate his development:

“My loan at Rangers, I’m so so thankful for. I loved my time up there, unbelievable football club. The size of it, Steven Gerrard being the manager was a massive pull.

“I thought it was a prank call. He’s my hero. I loved watching him as a player, it was unbelievable to play for him. I did find it tough, a long way from Nottingham and I’m a big home boy. Massive learning curve at Rangers.”

After scoring his first goal for Rangers against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup, Gerrard showed that he has a good eye for talent:

“I thought Joe Worrall was outstanding.

“What a big goal to keep his team in the cup.

“It was a Man of the Match performance, and he will be a captain of whatever team he plays for.

“He is a leader and he stepped up today.”

Worrall price tag could see Rangers consider return

What has happened to Worrall at Nottingham Forest has been bizarre.

A fall-out behind the scenes has escalated to the stage where he was stripped of the captaincy and sent out on loan to Besiktas in January with a £4m option to buy clause inserted into his deal.

For a player of his quality, that is good value for money.

Forest have to sell £20m worth of players to avoid falling foul of the same financial controls that saw both them and Everton docked points this season.

This puts them in a very weak position when it comes to negotiating fees and former Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson could do Nils Koppen a favour if he picks up the phone.

Worrall isn’t the player he was when he was on loan at Rangers.

He is more mature, more composed and much more consistent.

As a replacement for Ben Davies or the previously dropped Goldson, Rangers could almost sign Worrall without losing any money.

That he is available and his club are desperate for the money could make it an easy deal.

Good in the air, comfortable in possession, a natural leader, has experience of Rangers and the SPFL, is available and affordable – what’s not to like?
