Rangers Academy full-back James Maxwell is set for a loan move to Ayr United as the left-back takes a path increasingly well-travelled by the club’s brightest prospects.

That’s according to the Herald, who claim that Maxwell will become the latest Gers talent to leave the club on loan this season.

This comes after a successful loan spell with Queen of the South in the Championship last season with Maxwell now tasked with impressing for David Hopkin’s side.

Maxwell played in 32 games for the Doonhammers last season, netting an impressive five times from full-back.

According to the Herald, Ayr United have beaten off competition from the top flight in Norway to secure a deal for Maxwell with Rangers retaining the right to recall the player in January.

This prospective deal could be announced next week with the club already seeing Ben Williamson (Livingston) and Kai Kennedy (Dunfermline) move on loan this season.

Not only has the Championship served the Gers well in recent seasons as a breeding ground to develop their top talent but Ayr United have previously taken Stephen Kelly on loan.

The midfielder, now 21, certainly impressed on loan with the Honest Men and Maxwell, 19, will be hoping to be the latest Gers kid to make an impression on the Ayrshire coast.
