High-profile reported Rangers target Gary Cahill is set to have a medical at AFC Bournemouth today after agreeing one-year deal, according to Sky Sports.
Last month, the Sun reported that the Gers were eyeing up a swoop for the 35-year-old, whose Crystal Palace contract had expired.
It was suggested that the Eagles wanted him to stay on at Selhurst Park, but the former England international confirmed on Twitter on 1 August that he had left the London club.
Now, after just a few weeks as a free agent, it looks as though he’s chosen his next challenge.
Sky Sports reports that he’s agreed a one-year deal with EFL Championship club Bournemouth and will undergo a medical at some point today (Thursday).
Rangers-linked player set for Bournemouth medical
This was an interesting transfer link and there’s a clear connection between Gerrard and Cahill, given that they were teammates at international level.
However, it always seemed unlikely that he’d end up at Ibrox.
Initial reports suggested that the Gers were prepared to pay him handsomely, but it would have been a big move for the defender at this stage of his career and the manager already has plenty of options at centre-back.
It’s a slight surprise that Cahill has opted to drop to the Championship given that Premier League side Southampton were also credited with interest [The Telegraph] but perhaps the challenge of helping the Cherries back to the top flight was simply more appealing to the highly-decorated veteran.
Rangers may already be well-stocked at the back, but they have also been linked with a defender who has already played for two Glasgow clubs.
