Handsome World Cup hitman makes “unofficial offers” claim amid Rangers striker crisis

Rangers-linked Korean striker Cho Gue-sung claims he had “several unofficial offers” from England and Scotland before his switch to FC Midtjylland.

Rangers were strongly linked with a move for the now 25-year-old hitman back in January when Alan Nixon claimed the Ibrox club were hoping to pip Old Firm rivals Celtic to his signature.

The Parkhead side did seem the more likely to make a move for Cho Gue-sung – but eventually plunged for K-League alternative Oh Hyeon-gyu – with the striker also linked to the likes of Watford down south.

Eventually staying at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the winter window, Gue-sung moved to Denmark with FC Midtjylland in the summer in a £2.6m deal and the rest is history.

Cho Gue-sung on “unofficial interest”

Speaking about potential interest from the UK in an interview with the Athletic – which focuses more on the handsome striker’s breakthrough as a model after the World Cup in Qatar – Cho Gue-sung has also been talking about his move to Europe.

Whilst a switch to Rangers never appeared to gather more traction than a few headlines, the forward claims there was plenty of “unofficial” interest from across the UK.

“In the winter transfer window, there were many offers from a lot of different clubs, but I waited until the summer,” said Gue-sung.

“There were several unofficial offers, from England and Scotland. But once I made my decision, I stuck with it.

“I wasn’t afraid of the media attention, but I only wanted to focus on football. I wanted a club where I would start in every game. I was sure that Midtjylland could offer me that. Midtjylland was the most interested, so that’s why I picked them.”

Rangers striker crisis

With Rangers in the middle of something of a striker crisis, perhaps the club might be regretting not stepping up potential interest in Cho Gue-sung.

That’s even if no-one can be guaranteed minutes in Glasgow.

The big Korean striker, 25, has enjoyed a fruitful season in the Danish Superliga to date with an impressive return of eight league goals for FC Midtjylland this season.

Rangers, conversely, have just learned Brazilian striker Danilo faces four months out of action whilst Kemar Roofe continues to be used sparingly by Philippe Clement.

There are major question marks surrounding striker Cyriel Dessers – who did score v Dundee at the weekend – and it’s an area of the squad there are likely to be transfer reinforcements at Ibrox.

Given Cho Gue-sung’s start at FC Midtjylland, something tells us the opportunity to sign the forward has already been and gone.
