Steven Gerrard spoke to RangersTV yesterday, concerning the capture of Jermain Defoe, from Bournemouth.
He said he felt that the club and the player were a “match made in heaven” at the minute. In addition, he lauded Defoe as one of the Premier League’s greatest ever strikers.
An opinion backed up by his numbers.
However, during the interview, his comments may have also revealed his intentions for Ryan Hardie.
“I think it was an area of the team we really needed to bolster, to challenge and to compete. You really need strong options in the forward positions. So, alongside Kyle and Alfredo, he gives us another interesting player”, said the manager.
Hardie not in the reckoning?
Hardie is conspicuously absent from Gerrard’s appraisal of his striking options.
That’s despite the forward being asked to return from his loan at Livingston, in order to travel to Tenerife.

We speculated yesterday about why there had been no official statement on Hardie’s return.
Perhaps, that’s because it’s very likely to be temporary.
Gerrard says he wants to observe him at close quarters before making a decision. However, perhaps he’s really just looking to the future, with every intention of sending him back to Livingston.
He has been
sensational there since recovering from injury. Surely, that’s the best place for him right now.
Not, as fourth choice at Rangers, whether there’s an SPL title to compete for or not.
Those comments from Gerrard, might have revealed that he feels the same way.
