Glen Kamara: Arsenal splash out £17.2m on midfielder amid links to Rangers star

Premier League giants Arsenal were one of a number of names linked to Rangers star Glen Kamara after his performances at Euro 2020 with Finland.

The Ibrox midfielder is a former Academy graduate at the north London club and was linked to the Emirates by leading Mirror journalist Graeme Bailey.

Kamara, 25, was mentioned on a shortlist of midfielders which included the likes of Yves Bissouma at Brighton, Donny van de Beek at Man Utd and Ebrima Darboe of AS Roma.

However, the Gunners have not opted to move for any of these names – so far at least – as they strengthen their midfield with the signing of Anderlecht star Albert Sambi Lokonga.

The 21-year-old Belgian midfielder is one of the brightest talents in the country’s national game and broke through at Anderlecht as a 17-year-old.

Since then the midfielder has gone on to make 78 appearances for the Purple & White, scoring three goals and earning seven Belgian U21 caps, scoring twice.

Sambi – as he wants to be known to the Arsenal faithful – has signed a “long-term” deal in London and signs for an undisclosed fee, reported to be around £17.2m [BBC Sport].

Captaining Vincent Kompany’s Anderlecht at times last season, Arsenal have described the midfielder as a “big target” and this is a significant outlay.

Lokonga move serves as a lesson to Rangers

Lonkonga plays a similar role to Rangers star Kamara and this signing hints at two things surrounding the Rangers midfielder.

Firstly, Arsenal appear to have turned their attentions elsewhere by strengthening their midfield with Lokonga with other areas of their squad now requiring greater investment.

And secondly – with Belgian domestic football on a similar tier to the top end of the Scottish game – Rangers are right to be holding out for top dollar for Glen ahead of next season.

Arsenal aren’t the only ones who’ve been linked to Kamara either, with a handful of fellow Premier League clubs said to be scouting the midfielder.

This includes one former Steven Gerrard manager who is reportedly keen on breaking Stevie G’s heart for the second time this season.
