'Gio was aware' - Wilson explains Rangers' decision to recall Cedric Itten

Ross Wilson has explained Rangers’ surprise decision to recall Cedric Itten from his loan spell at Greuther Furth.

Itten was sent to the newly-promoted Bundesliga club on the final day of the summer transfer window, which was, at the time, also a surprise call.

The Switzerland international had been a standout performer in pre-season, scoring against Real Madrid and Arsenal.

He was clearly still surplus to requirements as far as Steven Gerrard was concerned, though, and if he wasn’t going to play at Ibrox it was better for him to be elsewhere.

However, there’s been a regime change during the five months or so that Itten spent in Germany, and it seems that the new manager thinks more highly of the striker than his predecessor did.

That’s because Gers sporting director Ross Wilson has suggested that it was Gio van Bronckhorst who initiated the process of bringing him back to Ibrox.

“Gio was aware of Cedric’s profile as a player prior to the confirmation of his appointment as Rangers manager,” said Wilson [Rangers.co.uk].

“In recent weeks, we have discussed the possibility of bringing Cedric back into the group and following a chat with him at the weekend, we have done just that.

“Clearly, Cedric knows the club well, knows what winning here feels like and joins a squad that he is already a popular member of.”

These interesting comments suggest that Itten could well play a significant role for the Light Blues over the second half of the season.

Last season – his maiden at Ibrox – he made 38 appearances, but the vast majority of them came from the bench.

He scored six goals in total, with all four of his Premiership goals coming against Motherwell.

During his loan spell, he scored twice in 12 Bundesliga appearances for a team struggling at the foot of the table.

Itten’s return was announced after the departure of Jermain Defoe had been confirmed by the club.

Defoe was a superb ambassador for Rangers during his three-year stay in Glasgow and he produced many fine moments on the pitch.

The veteran striker scored 32 goals in 74 appearances, with highlights including a thumping finish away at Aberdeen in February 2019, a goal of the season contender against Livingston in October 2020 and a brilliant goal in a 4-1 hammering of Celtic in May 2021.

Meanwhile, two exciting prospects got on the scoresheet as Rangers B defeated an SPFL club.
