Gerrard’s breakthrough Rangers star officially joins Premiership rivals

Rangers winger Glenn Middleton has officially joined Dundee United for an undisclosed fee, moving on from the club on a permanent basis.

The talented Scotland U21 international leaves Ibrox after a series of loan moves and will now hope to get regular, consistent football at Tannadice.

Breaking through at Rangers as a teenager after joining from Norwich City, Glenn Middleton was once the blue-eyed boy of the Ibrox youth department.

Handed a debut by Steven Gerrard in 2018, Middleton netted five times in a breakthrough season as a teenager but struggled to break back into the team after this.

A direct, pacey left-winger who is undoubtedly a talented young footballer, it looked unlikely that this would change at Rangers and fans will wish Glenn Middleton all the best at Dundee United.

The winger himself appears delighted with the move and following loan stints at Hibs and St Johnstone, Middleton can now put his full focus on making an impact at the ambitious Premiership club.

New Dundee United manager Jack Ross, who has been busy this summer adding the likes of former Scotland international Steven Fletcher to the squad, expressed his delight at the signing.

“I’m really excited to have Glenn here. He will be a brilliant addition to our squad,” said Ross [Dundee United].

“The fans will see the quality he can provide on the pitch but it’s up to me to get that out of him on a consistent basis.

“I’ve spoken about Mathew Cudjoe’s impact and ability to eliminate players and produce something out of nothing and Glenn can do that too.

“Glenn brings an attacking intent to the group.

“He’s a player I’ve already worked with in the past – albeit for a relatively short time.

“But I’ve always watched his career to see how he is progressing. He’s a really young man but he has a huge amount of potential and there’s still a lot he can achieve in his career.

“He’s played well against my teams as an opposition manager and also against Dundee United. It’s down to me to help him showcase his ability all the time.

“For a young man he has a lot of game time behind him at international level. To play 22 times for Scotland under-21s is impressive but the next step for him is can he progress his international career further?

“He can only do that by being a successful player at Dundee United.

“I’m delighted we’ve been able to get him here on a permanent deal so in terms of what Tony Asghar and the owner Mark Ogren have done so far in the transfer window. It’s been terrific.”

In total, Glenn Middleton made 29 appearances for Rangers, scoring five goals and laying on five assists.

Meanwhile, a new Rangers signing has been snapped meeting up with a former Ibrox international.
