Steven Gerrard has addressed the future of Jermain Defoe, as quoted by the Daily Record.
Earlier this week, in an interview with Sky Sports, the veteran striker made it clear he wanted to sign for Rangers when his loan deal expires at the end of the season.
He’s set to be released by parent club AFC Bournemouth in the summer and therefore, would be available on a free.

Gerrard responds after Rangers loanee Defoe’s transfer comments
“If he stays in the form he’s in then, of course, I would want him around here for as long as possible,” said the manager, as quoted by the Daily Record. “It’s definitely something that’s on all of our minds as a staff and as a club.”
“Jermain’s in terrific form. I’m sure he’s frustrated with me in terms of his game time but I love that. He wants to play every minute. He’s just as hungry now as when I first bumped into him at 22 or 23.
“He’s first on the training pitch and the last off. That’s the reason why he can go on because he’s still got that drive to carry on.”
Gerrard also suggested that a coaching role could be arranged for Defoe, although securing his services as a player would be the priority.

Verdict
It’s no surprise to see Gerrard respond positively to Defoe’s midweek comments, and his words should be music to the striker’s ears.
Former England teammates, the two clearly have a great relationship and the decision to bring Defoe in on loan is paying dividends for the Gers boss.

There’s a long way to go in the season, but as we’ve said before, if he keeps up his current standards, there’s no reason not to keep him on.
