Gerrard comments seem to refute Morelos’ reported Rangers transfer wish

On Friday afternoon, a high-profile transfer story broke with translated quotes attributed to Alfredo Morelos suggesting that the player wants to leave Steven Gerrard and Rangers behind in January [Daily Record].

However, the latest comments from the Gers manager on his talismanic striker suggest otherwise.

Stevie G discussed the blossoming bromance between his two senior strikers and claims Morelos is as a happy as he’s ever been at the club.

“I think they (Morelos and Defoe) are driven on by the thought that they can both become heroes at Rangers if they continue to fire the team to success,” said Gerrard, as quoted by the Scottish Herald. “That’s the main goal. They get on ever so well off the pitch, and on the pitch.”

“Alfredo was really close to Candeias when he was here. Daniel left and it was a small concern how he would react to that. But it’s actually had the opposite effect. He has come out of his shell more and is mixing better with other people.

“He seems to be in a fantastic place both on and off the pitch.”

Verdict

The story about Morelos’ burning desire to leave for a ‘bigger’ and ‘more competitive’ league as soon as possible, did seem at odds with his most recent behaviour.

The forward has 18 goals for the season and has shown nothing but a commitment for the cause to date, improving his disciplinary record beyond recognition.

After scoring the second of his two goals at Ross County on Wednesday night, he beamed and pointed to the Rangers badge in front of the jubilant Gers fans. It was hardly the act of someone who’s itching to get away.

Judging by these comments, it seems Gerrard is in a similar position to the supporters. As far as he can tell, things couldn’t be better for El Bufalo right now.

As long as he keeps performing to this level in the lead up to the winter break, all parties will be happy and if someone wants to try to prize him away in January, they’ll need to put an astronomical offer on the table.
