Rangers are moving forward with a potential deal for Leon Balogun after he was in Glasgow on Tuesday.

That is according to the Daily Record, who claim that Balogun travelled to Glasgow on Tuesday for medical tests.

Rangers put Balogun through his paces as a surprise Ibrox return now appears to be on the horizon.

The Gers suffered a major defensive blow on Tuesday as a major injury for talented youngster Leon King was confirmed.

An ankle injury will keep King on the sidelines for a lengthy period of time and Rangers need defensive cover.

Beale appears to have called up his old pal Balogun and a return to Rangers is now firmly in the works.

Michael Beale is a big fan of Leon Balogun

Beale and Balogun first worked together at Rangers during the Steven Gerrard era.

Balogun joined Rangers from Wigan Athletic back in 2020, first signing a one-year deal before extending his deal until 2022.

When the Nigerian left Rangers last summer, he was snapped up by Beale as they reunited at Queens Park Rangers.

Beale hailed Balogun as a ‘quiet leader’ and was ‘flabbergasted’ that nobody else signed him last summer.

Beale also praised Balogun as a ‘very special person’ and believes the defender has ‘elite standards’ in his approach.

Balogun was only given a one-year deal at QPR and with Beale gone, the R’s let him go, paving the way for a return to Ibrox.

Balogun won’t set pulses racing but he’s a solid stop-gap

Rangers have had defensive targets in mind this summer with Auston Trusty and Jonathan Panzo heavily linked.

This is an entirely different situation though with Rangers needing to add short-term cover with King out.

Rangers will still have big plans for King moving forward, so adding a longer-term defensive signing doesn’t really make sense.

Adding Balogun to the mix as cover for King’s injury whilst bringing his leadership and experience isn’t the worst idea in the world.

We can’t expect Rangers fans to get excited about the signing of a 35-year-old free agent but in the context of King’s injury situation, this move may well make sense.
