Rangers are being linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven left back Fredrik Oppegard, so let’s dig into his career ahead of a potential move to Ibrox.
Rangers have already secured one signing this month with striker Fabio Silva arriving on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Philippe Clement has only lost one game as Rangers boss but will surely want more new recruits to really shape his squad.
A left back is likely to be a prime target with question marks over the futures of both Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz.
The Daily Record claimed last week that Rangers have looked at PSV Eindhoven talent Fredrik Oppegard and we could see a move materialise this month.
Fredrik Oppegard, the story so far
Oppegard was born in Oslo and started his career with KFUM-Kameratene Oslo – the sporting branch of Oppegard’s local YMCA in the Norwegian capital.
Valerenga spotted Oppegard’s talent in 2017 and within just two years, he was off to PSV Eindhoven.
The 21-year-old has only managed 11 first-team appearances for PSV though, spending most of his time in the Jong PSV side.
PSV loaned Oppegard out to fellow Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles in January 2023, allowing him to play nine games of senior action.
Oppegard has yet to pick up his first Norway cap but has been a regular through the age groups, picking up caps all the way from Under-15 to Under-21 level.

Fredrik Oppegard, what they say
“They deserve this. Peersman is a potential first-team goalkeeper, Bakayoko has impressive stats to boast of, Saibari has developed well with PSV U21 and Oppegård also has a bright future ahead of him. They are now in a position to live up to the high expectations,” – former PSV Eindhoven boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, speaking last season.
“He may be a bit shy in an unfamiliar environment. He doesn’t talk much about his ambitions, but he certainly has them,” – Norway Under-21 teammate and former PSV teammate Mathias Kjolo, speaking last season.
Fredrik Oppegard to Rangers analysis
We should maybe get used to seeing links to PSV players.
Rangers have brought in Nils Koppen as director of football recruitment after more than five years with PSV.
Where did new signing Silva spend the second half of last season on loan? That’s right, PSV.
Now we see Oppegard being linked and whilst the Norwegian appears to have talent and potential, his lack of senior action in the Netherlands leaves us to question if he’s really ready for Rangers.
A loan move surely wouldn’t help Rangers, this would have to be a permanent move with the idea of developing Oppegard in the coming years.
Other left backs have been linked and excite us more than Oppegard, who maybe isn’t what Rangers need right now given his lack of experience for a 21-year-old.
