Formerly Rangers linked midfielder Renato Tapia has confirmed that he will leave Feyenoord this summer, during an Instagram Live interview with Peruvian journalist, Cesar Vivar.

The 24-year-old turned out against Rangers in the Europa League group stages in September before Voetbal International claimed in January that both the Gers and Celtic were interested in his signature.

No move materialised during the winter window, though, and Tapia only featured twice in 2020 under Dick Advocaat before all football in the Netherlands was cancelled in response to the global health crisis.

Verdict

Tapia played regularly during the early stages of the season but after Jaap Stam’s resignation, he slipped down the pecking order and ultimately endured a disappointing campaign.

He’s unlikely to be short of offers this summer as he searches for a new club, though.

AD reports that Cruz Azul and Boca Juniors have both previously shown interest and other clubs will likely soon be circling.

It remains to be seen whether or not Rangers will revive their alleged interest. The Gers have been linked with other midfielders including Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson [Scottish Sun] and Niklas Dorsch of Heidenheim.

Tapia didn’t make much of an impact in the game against Rangers earlier in the season but he is a former Eredivisie winner and is available for free.

He is a versatile operator capable of playing in defence as well as in midfield, while with over 50 caps for Peru he has extensive international experience and at 6ft 1″, offers a decent physical presence.
