Former Rangers goalkeeper Liam Kelly is set to sign for Motherwell on a permanent deal, according to the Scottish Sun.

Kelly is a Gers academy graduate who made first-team matchday squads between 2015 and 2018 around loan spells at East Fife and Livingston.

However, frustrated at a lack of playing time at Ibrox, he eventually opted to move on. He spent a season as a Livi player before linking up with former Gers boss Mark Warburton at QPR.

After slipping down the pecking order at Loftus Road, he returned to Scotland in January, joining Motherwell on loan.

The 25-year-old excelled at Fir Park, winning the Players Player of the Year award despite missing the first half of the season, and now it looks as though he’s going to rejoin the Steelmen.

Kelly has been at QPR pre-season this week but the Scottish Sun reports that he will return to Motherwell on a permanent deal ‘in the coming days’.

It’s asserted that Dundee United are also interested in signing him but that Graham Alexander is set to win the race.

No estimated transfer fee is included in the report.

As a young keeper, Kelly didn’t quite have enough to make an impact at Ibrox but he’s come on leaps and bounds since his departure, as he showed during a strong few months with the ‘Well at the back end of last season.

His expected return to Fir Park constitutes a big boost for the Steelmen ahead of their 2021/22 campaign and it would be no surprise if he sat near the top in terms of Premiership goalkeeper stats come May.

Meanwhile, another former Rangers player has expressed his delight after joining an EFL Championship club.
