Former Rangers forward Joe Dodoo has signed for Wigan Athletic on a short-term deal following a brief spell in Turkey.

Dodoo joined the Gers from Leicester City in 2016 but never managed to establish himself at Ibrox.

He scored five goals in 27 appearances for the club in all competitions and had loan stints at both Charlton Athletic and Blackpool before being released in the summer of 2019.

After a period as a free agent, the 25-year-old then joined Bolton Wanderers before heading to Turkey in September 2020 to sign for Turkish side Ankara Keçiörengücü.

He turned out 16 times for the second-division club and scored two goals but ended his stay there in January.

Cash-strapped EFL side Wigan have snapped him up now, though, with his signing announced on Tuesday evening prior to their League One fixture at Northampton Town.

“It’s good to be here, and I’ll be doing everything I can to help the club stay up, and then hopefully push on to where it belongs,” said Dodoo [Wigan Today].

“The club’s obviously going through a very difficult situation, but there’s still plenty of games and plenty of points left to fight for.

“I just want to settle down and enjoy my football, which will hopefully see myself playing my best football. If I’m not playing football, I’m not happy, and being here is perfect for me to be able to do that.”

Dodoo made his Latics debut in the closing stages of an important 1-0 victory, with former Motherwell loanee Callum Lang netting the winner in the 82nd minute.

They remain in the relegation zone but the win lifted them up to 21st and they are only behind Bristol Rovers, who are currently safe, on goal difference.

Dodoo isn’t the only former Rangers striker to have found a new club this week, with Kyle Lafferty reportedly agreeing a move to a team chasing European football.
