Former Crystal Palace star Andros Townsend, who recently suggested that he’d be open to joining Rangers, has officially signed for Everton.

Despite only being 30, Townsend is a very experienced player, having racked up 243 Premier League appearances, the majority of which have been in a Palace shirt.

The winger spent five years at Selhurst Park but has been a free agent since his contract there expired at the end of June.

When appearing on talkSPORT last month, the former England international said he was ‘open to everything’ after being asked if he’d be keen to join either Rangers or Celtic.

However, it’s now been confirmed that he’s switched London for Liverpool rather than Glasgow.

Everton announced his signing on a two-year deal on Tuesday afternoon, as he links up once again with Rafa Benitez, who was his manager at Newcastle United in 2016.

“I think everyone knows what Everton is,” he said [Evertonfc.com]. “It’s a massive football club, it’s very ambitious, a club which has been trying to get back to where it belongs into Europe and beyond. I’ll be doing all I can to help the Club do that.

“Everton is a massive football club and has big ambitions next season. As the old cliché goes, it was a no-brainer.”

England v Germany - International Friendly

This is a big move for Townsend, particularly given that Palace’s decision not to renew his contract suggested they believe he is past his best.

Despite his familiarity with Steven Gerrard having turned out alongside him for England and the player’s apparent willingness to consider a move to Ibrox, Rangers were never linked to Townsend by a credible source and it’s unlikely that an approach was actually made.

The Gers could perhaps do with more quality in wide areas. Yet, even though the likes of Jordan Jones, Brandon Barker and Glenn Middleton haven’t impressed in pre-season, in Ryan Kent, Fashion Sakala and Scott Wright, Steven Gerrard does have a few dynamic options at his disposal.

Townsend may not be coming to Glasgow, but the Gers have been linked with one of his former Crystal Palace teammates.
