Rangers defender Jack Simpson has been reportedly linked with a summer exit from Ibrox, with English Championship club Birmingham City being the likely destination for the player, that’s according to a recent report by Football Insider.

It’s fair to say that Simpson hasn’t exactly set the world on fire during his spell in Glasgow. He has barely managed a sniff of game time since Giovanni van Bronckhorst arrived at the club in late November and a summer exit will suit both parties.

There was interest in a move during the January transfer window, with Middlesborough and Birmingham keen, but both clubs failed to make an offer in time and the defender remains at the club until the summer.

Simpson signed for the Ibrox side in January 2021, initially on a pre-contract but Steven Gerrard managed to secure the player early as he featured sporadically as the club strolled to the league title.

The 25-year-old has only made six appearances this season and following some initial signs that the signing was a solid one, it’s not turned out how many expected.

Gio will be aiming to make his own signings and rejig the playing squad to how he sees fit. With John Souttar arriving in the summer, plus interest still high in Vitesse defender Danilho Doekhi [DailyRecord], then there is little to no chance of him getting regular minutes next season.

The Championship is probably a level in which he is most suited and a move to Birmingham could reignite his playing career. It has worked for Juninho Bacuna who moved from the Gers to Birmingham and Simpson could well follow suit.
