FIFA will reportedly recommend changes to the summer transfer window to align with the altered dates of the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, with Rangers set to be affected.

On Thursday afternoon, France Football provided details of a FIFA document leaked by Reuters, which gave insight into contingency plans amid the global pandemic.

The document detailed plans for a blanket extension of all player and coaching staff contracts due to expire in June, while also exploring the prospect of helping clubs to pay players while no training or matches are taking place.

However, there are further details included which relate to the summer transfer window.

Traditionally, clubs are able to buy and sell players between early June and the end of August/beginning of September.

Yet, given that the 2019/20 season may continue well into the summer months, there’s been uncertainty around whether or not there’ll even be a window to speak of.

However, it seems alterations to the usual schedule are in the pipeline.

France Football‘s report on the document leaked by Reuters asserts that ‘there may be changes, provided it does not exceed the maximum 16 weeks allowed.’

All major stakeholders including the confederations, the member associations, the Championships, clubs and players will apparently be consulted before any final verdict is reached on changes.

With the subject of the transfer window up for debate at a FIFA meeting on Thursday, more details may soon emerge.

It’s positive news for Rangers that there are plans to move rather than scrap the window.

Given that there could be several months without any fixtures, and therefore, income from ticket sales, the club may need to sell players to help balance the books after all this upheaval.

By the same token, a transfer window would also allow the club to bring players in. After a dismal start to 2020 in domestic competition, it’s clear that squad improvements are required if the Gers are to launch a sustained title challenge next season.

Rangers already have an exclusive option to buy Ianis Hagi which could be exercised during this period, while Florian Kamberi is also eyeing a permanent contract.
