Gheorghe Popescu, chairman of Ianis Hagi’s former club FC Viitorul Constanta, has provided an update on the Rangers loanee’s future, as quoted by Gazeta Sporturilor.

The 21-year-old joined the Gers in January on a short-term deal but the club have an exclusive option to buy him in the summer.

There have been doubts about Rangers’ ability to pay the £4 million price tag due to the impact of the global health crisis, while Lazio are said to be ready to swoop if the Gers don’t cough up [Scottish Sun].

However, Popescu believes that while there may be some renegotiation required, the deal will go through.

“Certain contractual terms will probably be renegotiated between the two clubs, but I am convinced that this transfer will be made,” he said, as quoted by Gazeta Sporturilor. “Rangers want him very, very much.”

“Ianis really wants to stay in Glasgow, because he has adjusted very well, he is very appreciated, he has a very good chemistry with the coach, with his colleagues, the team management.

“He started and played very well in these matches, until the beginning of the pandemic. He wants to stay there and I think that will happen no matter what offers he has. Rangers is the number one option.”

Verdict

This will be very exciting news for Gers fans given the ability Hagi has shown during his short stint at the club.

He’s still inconsistent and didn’t quite shine as he would have hoped in the Premiership, perhaps partially because he was often deployed out wide.

However, he’s a technically gifted playmaker who shone on the big stage with a brace in the dramatic 3-2 Europa League win over Braga in February.

Hagi has been one of very few positives for Rangers in 2020 and retaining his services would be a boost ahead of next season.
