Rangers have been linked with Greece international right back Giannis Kotsiras, however, Max Johnston at Motherwell should be the main target to cover James Tavernier.
With clubs in Serie A and now Sporting Lisbon said to be interested, the out of contract Scotland youth cap could be a real coup for the future.
Having missed out on Aaron Hickey and Josh Doig, Rangers don’t want to miss out on Max Johnston too.
Reacting to reports that Johnson is attracting interest from the Portuguese giants, fan media outlet Heart and Hand agree that Michael Beale should be entertaining a move for the talented 19-year old.
Respoding to a post by Everything Scotland on Twitter, David Edgar claimed that:
“We should be all over this move.”
The son of former Gers winger Allan would only cost a development fee and, for one of the country’s hottest prospects, this is a no brainer.
If clubs like Sporting Lisbon are watching him then we definitely should be.
Why Rangers should be after Max Johnston
A goal or an assist every three games in the league is a great start to Johnston’s top flight career and the signs are that he is only going to get better.
The defensive side of his game will improve but his work in the final third suggests that he is an upgrade on Adam Devine already.
The Gers academy product has done little wrong for Rangers, including when he covered at left back, but he just hasn’t done enough either.
Nobody is expecting Devine to replace James Tavernier’s numbers but he needs to be similar in style.
Devine is neat and tidy and a willing runner but he doesn’t seem to have any out and out strengths other than his athleticism.
Players like Alan Hutton and Nathan Patterson demonstrated that X-factor quickly after breaking into the first team at Ibrox.
At a similar age there is a clear favourite.
Auchenhowie doesn’t have to create world beaters, players like Devine who has supplemented the squad this season are fine.
But if someone better comes along then it should be time to cash in, every academy player sold adds up over time.
Devine might not be good enough for Rangers long term, but there are a lot of teams in the Premiership, or England, that would gladly have him.
