Ex-Ajax, Real Madrid and Spurs midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has stuck the boot into Rangers’ abysmal Champions League campaign.

The legendary former Dutch international playmaker now works in Dutch media and has claimed that Ibrox club deserve the title of the tournament’s worst-ever performers.

This comes after Rangers had dumped PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League Playoff and played Rafael van der Vaart’s former side Ajax in the Group Stages.

Rangers were comfortably beaten in both matches against Ajax and Rafael van der Vaart has branded the Ibrox side “mediocre” as the impact of the woeful campaign is felt around Europe.

“I think there is very little in that [Rangers], I really mean that,” said Rafael van der Vaart [Sport Nieuws].

“It often looks a lot and grand when they play at home with those great fans behind it. But haven’t we seen them against Ajax? And against PSV? PSV screwed up against them, and Ajax just had a good evening 2 months ago.

“I see too many Ajax players who are not in shape. There is too much doubt, always hassle.

“In the Champions League you simply fall short. Rangers is a mediocre opponent, you have to admit that. That record of worst CL- team ever? They deserve that too.”

Rafael van der Vaart slams Rangers’ Champions League showing

Having played across Europe’s top leagues in the Netherlands, Spain, England and Germany van der Vaart knows a thing or two about football and this is damning indictment of our performance.

The 109-cap Netherlands midfielder shows a contempt for the standards at Rangers in this tournament and shows the ridicule aimed at the club’s entire Champions League campaign.

Rangers impressed everyone on the continent by reaching the Europa League Final last season but so much of that has been undone in a matter of months.

But that’s not to say there haven’t been European achievements this season.
