Former Rangers striker Greg Stewart is heading back to Scotland after terminating his contract with Indian Super League side Mumbai City.
The ex-Rangers forward, 33, has been in India ever since leaving Ibrox in 2021, first turning out with Jamshedpur before moving to Mumbai City in 2022.
But despite impressing on the sub-continent – where he won back to back league titles – Greg Stewart is now set to return to Scotland.
Greg Stewart leaves India to return to Scotland
In a statement to supporters, City Group club Mumbai City have confirmed Greg Stewart’s immediate exit due to “critical personal reasons”.
Whilst we hope everything is ok with the striker, the situation has given rise to speculation about a potential footballing return to the country.
“Mumbai City can confirm that Greg Stewart will leave the club by mutual termination of his contract with immediate effect,” reads the statement.
“Stewart expressed his desire to leave the Islanders midway through the season and return home to Scotland due to critical personal reasons, compelling Mumbai City to agree to the aforementioned mutual termination of his contract.
“The Club places on record its thanks to Greg for his contributions to the Islanders, including 17 goals and 18 assists in 46 games and an ISL League Winners’ Shield in the 2022-23 season, and wish him and his family well for the future.”
Ex-Rangers striker still popular at Ibrox
Rangers signed Greg Stewart as his contract came to an end with Birmingham City back in 2019.
A boyhood bluenose, the forward backed up the Rangers squad under former manager Steven Gerrard and showed flashes of his quality particularly in that first season.
Also playing his part in the unbeaten 55-winning campaign of 2020/21, Greg Stewart remains a positive figure amongst fans and it’s good to hear about his success in India.
However, supporters will be wishing the forward all the best as he returns to Scotland to address whatever personal issues he is currently encountering.

Greg Stewart started his professional career with Cowdenbeath before moving to Dundee and eventually earning that big money move to Birmingham In 2016.
It didn’t happen for the striker down south and after loan spells at Aberdeen (twice) and Kilmarnock the striker moved to Rangers.
Playing 33 times for his boyhood club, Stewart netted three goals for Rangers and laid on seven assists in two seasons at Ibrox.
