Rangers have been tipped to make a move for Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck after a devastating injury to Steven Davis by ex-Ibrox striker Kris Boyd.

We have previously sign-posted former Premier League star John Fleck as a potential Ibrox target given previous comments from within the club regarding the need for homegrown players.

Not only is Scotland international Fleck regarded as a player homegrown in Scotland, but his time coming through the youth ranks and then playing in the first team with Rangers means he is also homegrown at the Scottish club.

Rangers are required to have at least eight players who have trained in Scotland for three years before their 21st birthday (four of those from within the club) in official European squads for UEFA competition.

Couple this with the fact John Fleck is out of contract at Sheffield United in the summer and a potential move for the 31-year-old ex-Rangers star presents an interesting option.

Kris Boyd backs Rangers to sign John Fleck

Speaking regarding Rangers’ January transfer business, Kris Boyd pointed to Fleck and claims that the ex-Ibrox star would be on his radar in this window.

“The obvious one for me would be John Fleck, Michael Beale has spoken about that central midfield area,” said Kris Boyd [Sky Sports].

“John Fleck has been at Rangers before. He has been brought up in it.

“He is a totally different player now from the one that left Rangers. People like him would be on my radar.

“I wouldn’t be rushing in and just grabbing players for the sake of it, especially in January.

“A lot of the time players haven’t been playing for their football clubs.

“It is important Rangers do their recruitment properly because this window and the next one are huge and deals need to be done.

“If deals are to be one in January I am sure Michael Beale will want to get them done.

“I think the summer is the most important window because there is an overhaul of the squad needed.”

The links to John Fleck come after Rangers lost influential midfielder and Northern Ireland veteran Steven Davis to a season-ending knee injury.

Injuries have defined Rangers’ campaign to date and perhaps John Fleck can help fill the void left by the legendary 37-year-old playmaker.

Meanwhile, Rangers boss Michael Beale has confirmed he’d love to secure a deal with one attacker.
