Ex-Crystal Palace star Andros Townsend, who recently hinted he’d consider a move to Rangers, is undergoing a medical at Everton, according to Sky Sports.

Townsend began his career at Tottenham and has also played for Newcastle United, but the majority of his 243 Premier League appearances came at Palace.

The 30-year-old winger spent five years at Selhurst Park but has been a free agent since his contract there expired at the end of June.

When appearing on talkSPORT last month, the former England international said he was ‘open to everything’ after being asked if he’d be keen to join either Rangers or Celtic.

However, it looks as though Townsend will only be moving from London to Liverpool rather all the way up to Glasgow, as he’s close to joining Everton.

He worked with new Toffees boss Rafa Benitez at Newcastle in 2016 and Sky Sports reported on Monday afternoon that he was undergoing a medical at the Merseyside club.

Townsend has bags of Premier League experience and would be a safe signing on a free transfer for Benitez as he looks to improve his options in wide areas.

The move hasn’t been confirmed yet but it looks like a matter of time before an announcement is made.

Some Rangers fans may have been hopeful that Gerrard would look to swoop for his former England teammate after his relatively encouraging comments on talkSPORT.

However, while the Gers have already brought in a former Premier League player in John Lundstram this summer, wages were always likely to be a stumbling block here and there’s no suggestion that contact was ever made with Townsend’s representatives.

Meanwhile, a Rangers-linked midfielder also looks to be heading elsewhere, with a four-year deal agreed.
