Former Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas reckons Rangers missed a trick by missing out on Benjamin Siegrist as the Ibrox club’s goalkeeping problems continue.
The Gers support were expecting the club to move for a new stopper in the summer amid a series of high-profile links with Allan McGregor ageing and the Gers needing reinforcements.

Amongst those links was Benjamin Siegrist, who was mentioned alongside both sides of the Old Firm as his contract ticked down at Dundee United.
The Swiss stopper would eventually sign on for our Old Firm rivals where he is now playing deputy to Joe Hart whilst Rangers handed McGregor a new deal and gave Jon McLaughlin the number one jersey.
Since then the Ibrox veteran has reclaimed the spot with Jon McLaughlin picking up an injury after his Celtic Park capitulation, the keeper having a nightmare in the 4-0 defeat earlier in the season.
‘Rangers should’ve plunged for Celtic star Benjamin Siegrist’
For Charlie Nicholas, the solution was staring Rangers right in the face and the ex-Parkhead man claims the Gers should’ve been wise enough to move for Benjamin Siegrist ahead of rivals Celtic.
“I remember last season there was some talk of Rangers being interested in Benjamin Siegrist,” Nicholas told the Scottish Daily Express.
“Well if they had properly followed that up he would be the No1 at Ibrox right now, rather than sitting on the Celtic bench.
“I was amazed – and still am – that Gio van Bronckhorst didn’t go out and get a new goalkeeper. It was the one glaring area that was his weakest and it was shown by Allan McGregor’s awful performance against Liverpool. It was a humiliation, the stark reality of where they are.”
The debate continues to rage around the Rangers goalkeeping position with Allan McGregor once again losing flight of the ball for Motherwell’s goal in the Gers’ 2-1 Scottish Premiership win at the weekend.
But with Jon McLaughlin also under scrutiny, does the answer lie in Rangers proving their faith elsewhere?
