As Rangers continued their winter training camp with a friendly against Hertha Berlin, we counted eight notable absences from the matchday squad.
Whilst Rangers succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against the Germans in Spain, the result was not important with the friendly clash more about the minutes in the player’s legs.
But between injury, internationals, and transfer speculation we counted a substantial number of absences as Philippe Clement and his team ramp up their mid-season preparations.
Borna Barisic
The Croatian international left-back, 31, has been linked with a move to Dinamo Zagreb in his home country this winter but an exit would surprise almost everyone.
Other reports have suggested Rangers have opened contract negotiations and the absence of Borna Barisic against Hertha Berlin can be put down to injury.
Ben Davies
Another who is currently sidelined due to injury, the jury firmly remains out on Ben Davies who has yet to really start repaying the £3m+ we paid Liverpool for his services last season.
There was talk about an exit in the summer but following an injury any suggestion of a January transfer for the ex-Preston stopper has been killed stone dead.
Ryan Jack
Ryan Jack looked to be coming onto a game under Philippe Clement but it all changed when the Rangers midfielder went on Scotland duties.
Clashes between the national side and Rangers have been frequent when it comes to Jacko, who has some big decisions to make in the summer.
Kieran Dowell
Whilst the rest of the names so far can be explained away by injury, the status of Kieran Dowell at Rangers is something different entirely given the player hasn’t been seen at the La Manga training camp.
The summer signing from Norwich City spent the bulk of the campaign out injured but has been used sparingly by Philippe Clement ever since coming back.
Tom Lawrence
One of the club’s highest earners, Tom Lawrence was supposed to be a game changing signing by Rangers after impressing with Derby County down south.
But the Welsh international – who has just turned 30 – has seen his 18 months in Glasgow devastated by injury and once again the Rangers star was nowhere to be seen v Hertha Berlin.
Abdallah Sima
A key contributor this season, Abdallah Sima is probably the only player on this list who has a genuine excuse having been called up for AFCON by Senegal.
A very useful attacker who has contributed 15 goals already since signing on loan from Brighton, Rangers could be without the forward until mid to late February.

Danilo
Brazilian striker Danilo is one of several summer Rangers signings who have yet to prove themselves with a devastating knee injury all but ending the hitman’s campaign.
The striker is still clearly some way away from being fully fit and Rangers fans will hope he can come back stronger and ready to repay the £6m we reportedly paid Feyenoord for his services.
Kemar Roofe
One of the most injury-prone players in recent Rangers history, when Kemar Roofe has played he has made some huge contributions.
But the issue is he just hasn’t played enough. Out of contract in the summer, once again the high-earning Rangers striker was missing v Hertha Berlin and we suspect it’ll soon be curtains at Ibrox.
